A letter from our Founder & CEO

For Families and Caregivers,

Father & Daughter on Jennie’s wedding day

My father was a beloved psychiatrist and developed dementia a few years before he died.

Like many family members, I regularly visited and helped him at his assisted living residence. While it was a lovely residence, much of the furniture in his room was uncomfortable and institutional.  I often saw him struggle to get out of his chair!

His inability to get up by himself reinforced a sense of loss and separation in me.  This was the person with whom I had been taking long walks in the woods up until he went into assisted living -- his illness had taken him to a place that was very far from home in every sense.

Many of my friends and coworkers expressed many of the same challenges and feelings of helplessness that I felt.  I wanted to design furniture that would reinvigorate people and help bring them together.

Intentional Design

Rosemary Bakker, renowned gerontologist and interior designer, and I agreed to collaborate. We started by thinking about all of the people that interact with our furniture -- the person living with it, their family members and their caregivers. We designed from the groundup to make sure that our designs offer more than meets the eye.

We envisioned how to make it:

  • Easier for someone to get in and out of a bed or a chair

  • Safer for her to get up and go to the bathroom at night

  • Prevent him from stubbing his toe or falling

  • Support a sense of autonomy and dignity for someone living with dementia

  • Comfortable for family members and caregivers to meaningfully engage while visiting them

  • Attractive and home-like

The result was Furnished Living, designed with the entire family of an older adult in mind.
